Mission:
Helps International, founded in 1983, assists indigenous populations in the Guatemalan highlands. On 12-day medical missions, undertaken January through May, its teams treat as many as 10,000 patients in U.S. government–built hospitals. About 60 volunteers serve on each team, typically a mix of general practitioners, anesthesiologists, and general, plastic, and eye surgeons, as well as dentists, pharmacists, and nurses.
